When participants enter a group learning situation they often express a ‘safe’ purpose or reason for being in the group that mirrors the original and advertised purpose of the program. However, there is often a secondary purpose that underlies this initial purpose. The secondary purpose includes the emotional unease a person experiences and actually motivates them to attend the group. If the person is to fully committed to learning in the group, this secondary purpose needs to be valued, recognised and addressed.
Working with the edge – Engaging young people in group work - Sydney, NSW
Date: 18-Aug-2010
Wesley Conference Centre, Sydney, NSW - Wednesday 18th August 2010 from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
This workshop explores the skills used to facilitate a group with challenging/difficult adolescents. It is often a challenge to facilitate discussions that tackle the difficult/awkward topics in natural and casual ways. Participants will explore and practice skills used to foster respectful interaction and stronger engagement of young people using the following principles:
Listen hard and hear what is said and not just what we want to hear
Explore the ideas which emerge and not just focus on things, which we think, are important
Build ways for young people to let us know if we have got it wrong.
The training covers the principles of group work including group dynamics, motivational group work models for change, working with resistance, working with aggressive young people and practical solutions to these issues.
Participants will also be able to use a variety of strengths based techniques and tools including the Choose Respect approach.
